Lisa Brown to be honored for Community Service

Lisa Brown will be the award recipient for the Gwen Pelletier Award for Excellence in Community Service to the Lower Cape Cod Community.

This award was established to honor Gwen Pelletier, who served as Executive Director of the CDP form 1995 to 2006. The award recognizes individuals, businesses or organizations who have had a positive contribution to the economic diversity of the Lower Cape Cod community through their programs, collaborative efforts and partnerships with other organizations.

We are pleased to present this year’s 2011 Gwen Pelletier Award for Excellence in Community Service to the Lower Cape Cod Community to Lisa Brown

Lisa Brown has been effecting positive change in her community & the outer cape for decades. At age 8 she began teaching horseback lessons to local kids and teens at her home in Wellfleet. By her sophomore year at Nauset High, she was teaching special needs students at the Clinical Teaching Center in Wellfleet from 12pm – 3pm, 5 days a week as an independent project which she created.

She began her high school teaching career at Nauset in 1997. The curricula she offers are World Cultures and Exploring & Respecting Differences, which she developed. Her classes cover human rights, social justice, sociology, politics, community service, environmental issues, and an overview of many other important topics. She also teaches culinary arts to special needs students. The after school programs she directs or has directed include the Human Rights Academy, The World Music & Gay-Straight Alliance, as well as being one of the junior class advisers. The Nauset World Music Ensemble, which writes all their own music under Lisa’s direction, performs at numerous fundraisers throughout the community. NWME’s debut concert is the annual Clothesline Concert in March which Lisa has helped produce for 12 years.

In the winter of 2001 Lisa inspired a conversation with Wellfleet’s Recreation Director to organize a festival that Wellfleet could call its own. Now 11 years later the Wellfleet Oyster Festival is known coast to coast and round the world. As the point person for the Outer Cape Human Rights Commission, she can be counted on by parents, law enforcement, students and community members to help mediate situations in times of need. Lisa was one of the 2 original owners of the Flying Fish Cafe in Wellfleet for 10 years in the late 80’s-90’s. As the chef and owner Lisa employed countless local youth.

In 2001 Lisa took her first trip to the island of Lagonav Haiti with local artist Ellen Lebow. In the summer of 2001 she and Ellen independently wrote grant proposals to the Cabot Lyman Trust for funds to build a music and arts center in the tiny village of Matenwa. Between them they were awarded $20,000 and set to oversee construction of the center. Since that time Lisa has taken at least 2 students a year from Nauset to experience life in the tiny village. Because of this work she was named as beneficiary of $50,000 to be used in Matenwa through the Haiti project which she established at Nauset High School.

Ground-Breaking for a Dozen Affordable Homes in Harwich - April 2010

Ground-Breaking for a Dozen Affordable Homes in Harwich -April 2010

In the midst of uncertainty about the housing market and the overall economy, there’s something very positive happening in Harwich. With the support of the Harwich Board of Selectmen, the Harwich Housing Authority and Barnstable County, the CDP was able to successfully finance the construction of 12 new units of affordable rental housing at 35 Main Street Extention.

At the recent groundbreaking, 50 people came together to celebrate this occasion and learn more about the features of these new homes.

Thankful Chases Pathway is being constructed using sustainable and high efficient building Practices and the residents will enjoy significant savings on their electric bills. The addition, the townhouse apartments will be outfitted with photovoltaics, made possible through funding from the Cape Light Compact’s Green Affordable Home Program.

Two units will be fully handicapped accessible. The remaining units will be,“visitable”. This means that each unit will have a zero step entrance and wider door openings making it easier to access by those with physical limitations.

Elizabeth Bridgewater, Director of Community Development Partnership, opened the celebration with a note of thanks to the many organizations and individuals who made this project possible.

Guest speakers included Sarah Peake (4th Barnstable District), Ed McManus, Chairman,Harwich Board of Selectmen, Bill Doherty, Chairman, Harwich Housing Authority and Roger Herzog, Executive Director, Community Economic Development Assistance Corporation.

For more information and how to apply for one of these homes, please contact Maureen Dooley Lauren at telephone number 508-240-7873, Ext. # 17.
